July is one of the best times of the year to reset your financial plan. The new financial year provides a clean opportunity to review super contributions, tax planning, retirement income needs and investment strategy.
From 1 July 2026, the general concessional contributions cap for superannuation increased to $32,500. Concessional contributions include employer superannuation guarantee contributions, salary sacrifice contributions and personal contributions claimed as a tax deduction.
The "non-concessional" cap has increased to $130,000 pa (subject to your eligibility requirements).
The higher caps may create additional planning opportunities for people who want to build retirement savings in a tax-effective way. However, it is important to remember that employer contributions count towards the cap, so the available amount for salary sacrifice or deductible personal contributions will vary from person to person.
The start of the financial year is a good time to review:
For retirees drawing account-based pensions, July is also a timely point to ensure pension payments are set correctly for the year ahead. For accumulation clients, it is a chance to set up regular contribution habits early rather than waiting until next June. Small changes made early in the year can have a meaningful long-term impact.
