December 2021 – CEO Message

By David Shaw, Founder & Executive Chair of WSC Group | Created on December 8, 2021

When the dust settles

As this is our last newsletter for 2021 calendar year, I’d like to reflect and look back on the year that was.

At the end of each year, I always like to joke that the best part about the year was it ending. Never more has this been valid than now.

2021 was an extraordinary year where we were faced by challenges, we had never thought possible. I believe years like these are sent to test our resilience and to show us how well we can cope under pressure.

Over the last 2 years, I have been reflecting on the impacts of COVID-19 on both my own and our clients’ business affairs, and I think the following comments would be appropriate.

From not being able to operate due to lockdowns, to not being able to source staff due to border closures, nearly all businesses have been affected to some degree. We have faced the last couple of years under exceptional circumstances, that no business owner could have ever predicted. Leaders and managers took on a lot of stress and responsibility for their work force. They have exerted a lot of energy assisting others through their struggles, while trying to keep themselves afloat as well.

So, I’d like to acknowledge all those businesses and leaders who survived the storm, and those who sadly could not tolerate it any longer. Our resilience and commitment to community helped us power through our lowest of lows, and I am looking forward to what is to come in the new year.

The reality is, hardship is inevitable, but it is what we do with the challenges we face that dictate how we can overcome them (granted, we have had a decade worth of hardship in the last two years!).

In 2022, we will see the full ramification of the economic consequences brought from the pandemic. As our cities begin to open and our businesses slowly try get back on their feet, this is where you will need to persevere and continue to invest time in your business and/or your personal career development.

When the dust settles, you want to make sure that you are well equipped to take advantage of the opportunities over the next few years. It is now time to sit and plan for the years ahead to ensure long-term success for yourself, your family, and your business.
