New Year, New Focus

Welcome to our first newsletter for 2023!

As we stride into the fresh New Year ahead, many of us like to set ourselves some form of ‘New Year’s Resolutions’. We set ourselves constructive goals which reflect some aspect of our lives that we are inspired to tweak for the better.

These may include lifestyle goals such as “I will walk 10,000 steps everyday” or “I will drink 8 cups of water each day” or “I will set aside 15mins each day to practice mindfulness to improve my mental wellbeing”. Or perhaps after a few years of COVID inactivity, we have a goal to give our car a bit more TLC or dust off the passport and head overseas. While we may tend to focus on lifestyle and health goals, have you ever considered setting yourself clear financial goals?

We’re not talking about the general:

“I want to be out of debt during 2023’

This is too broad and unsustainable to maintain in your day-to-day life. Instead, we are more so referring to goals that are both attainable and measurable. These kinds of goals look a little something like this:

“I want to pay down $1,000 of my non-deductible debt each month” or “I will contribute an additional $100 to super each fortnight”

Can you spot the difference?

This is an example of a SMART goal. That is, a goal which is:

Specific

Measurable

Attainable

Relevant

Time - bound

These SMART goals create a great foundation to work off, you may periodically reflect upon them, and make slight adjustments that are more relevant and achievable for you.
